Long-running engineering partnership for specialist aviation documentation workflows.
Aviation case study
A document management system that brought aviation maintenance documentation under full operational control.
A major European airline — one of the continent's largest aviation companies — faced a critical documentation challenge. Maintenance records for aircraft parts and components were stored across multiple formats, inconsistently structured, and difficult to retrieve under time pressure. Mechanics, pilots, and administrative staff needed instant access to the right documents without disrupting their workflows. Eleco Technologies was engaged to design and build the eDoc system from scratch: a Java-based document management platform purpose-built for aviation compliance and operational efficiency.

Client challenge
What the organisation needed to solve
Aviation maintenance documentation creates demanding information-management requirements that generic document repositories cannot satisfy. The airline's existing processes were cumbersome, error-prone, and lacked the agility needed for efficient operations. Documents arrived in XML and SGML formats with different structures and attributes. Mechanics and pilots needed instant, accurate access to maintenance manuals and technical service bulletins. Strict aviation industry regulations required meticulous record-keeping, document traceability, and guaranteed access to the latest version of every document — with no tolerance for retrieval errors.
Eleco Technologies solution
How the platform addressed the problem
Eleco Technologies built the eDoc system from scratch as a Java web application running on Tomcat with Oracle 11g database storage and Lucene full-text search. The system categorised documents into types and subcategories — maintenance manuals, technical service bulletins, and others — each with its own attribute set managed through the eDoc administration area. An XML and SGML processing pipeline transformed incoming documents into multiple output formats through XSLT. The AVS module handled efficient file creation and management. Lucene provided fast full-text search across the entire document library, giving mechanics and pilots the retrieval speed their workflows demanded.
Delivery model
Structured engineering delivery with clear team, timeline, and stack evidence.
Team composition
2 senior full-stack Java developers
1 technical lead
2 mid-level Java developers
Delivery approach
Conducted workshops and interviews with mechanics, pilots, and administrative staff before writing a line of code — ensuring the system was designed around real user workflows rather than assumed requirements.
Built the system from scratch around aviation document structures, processing pipelines, and compliance requirements rather than adapting a generic document repository.
Combined senior Java development, technical leadership, and mid-level Java engineering for a long-running product-development engagement that survived a pandemic pause and resumed with continuity.
Technology stack
Measured outcomes
Operational results that make the engagement commercially credible.
Delivered a purpose-built eDoc system that significantly reduced document retrieval time for maintenance staff, improving operational efficiency across the airline.
Achieved full regulatory compliance with aviation standards through robust document traceability, version control, and structured record-keeping.
Improved user satisfaction for mechanics, pilots, and administrative professionals who could access up-to-date documents quickly, reducing downtime and operational disruption.
"Working on this project, I felt like I was making significant progress in my programming career every day. This experience was an opportunity to improve my knowledge as well as a challenge. I learned a lot about SQL and progressed in development using Java, JavaScript, TypeScript, and DHTMLX."
